Silverfish Control

Public Awareness

Silverfish are insects that are commonplace within kitchens, basements, bathrooms, pantries and any other areas that tend to be dark, humid, damp and/or contain moisture. They are not parasites nor do they spread disease, although they are capable of physically contaminating foodstuffs and damaging food packaging, paperwork, fabrics and binding pastes. Silverfish are often unknowingly brought into a premises by occupants via storage boxes previously kept in an infested area though are capable of gaining access to a premises via foundation cracks and gaps. The reproductive numbers of silverfish can rapidly reach an uncontrollable amount ultimately resulting in severe damage within a household / office to possessions & materials resulting in financial loss which is why professionals like ourselves should be contacted as soon as signs or even suspicion becomes apparent.

Personal Preventative Measures

How to get rid of Silverfish!

The prevention of a silverfish infestation may come across as difficult due to not understanding the habitual behaviour of them or how their presence came to occupy your property at all. Once you have referred to the public awareness section above, there are a number of preventative measures that can be carried out by occupants to prevent or reduce their activity if not get rid of them before or whilst a silverfish treatment is in progress which are listed below:

  • Keeping Dried Foods Sealed (cereals, pasta, rice, flour, etc.) in plastic or glass air tight containers will reduce the presence and risk of contamination.
  • Ensure to Reduce Humidity providing adequate ventilation as silverfish thrive in moist, humid environments:
  1. Use a dehumidifier in damp basements,
  2. Seal up leaking pipes,
  3. Make sure the bathroom is well ventilated.
  • Ensure Paper Clutter is cleared preventing them from hiding amongst and consuming papers, magazines and books. If the are to be kept, be sure to keep them in the correct temperatures or keep them in plastic containers or closed binders.
  • Try to Repair and Maintain any interior / exterior cracks or crevices where the grout or binding no longer exists preventing points of access.

And last but not least, the best course of action to take would be to contact Steel Guard Pest Control for a survey and preventative programme to be carried out!
