Public Awareness

Brown Rats (commonly known as Sewer Rats) are of developed urban environments especially in large developed towns and cities where domestic or commercial refuse may accumulate and either or both where drainage and sewage systems exist which is a favourable location for them to reside. This particular species has an instinctive trait of borrowing, typically being one of the ways of gaining access to a premises, though it is also common for rat borrows to exist in closed or open external environments preferably close to a food or water source. If activity exists internally it is often an extension of external activity meaning the severity of the problem is higher than initially suspected.

Brown Rats may find their way into a premise by exploiting surrounding environmental defects i.e broken drain pipes or lids, gaps in external walls or doors, damaged air-bricks or through poor foundations within extensions to a premises. They are also capable of climbing short distances to reach access points (though they are poor climbers) more so utilising this skill once they are inside a premise. Extreme damage to both hard and soft structural or household materials (including cabling introducing fire risks) is very likely due to their ability to gnaw (ultimately endangering the lives of occupants) if not just to keep their incisors (teeth) short and sharp which concludes that their eradication is extremely urgent before an infestation becomes out of control.
