Flea infestations are known to be a common occurrence within a premises throughout urban and rural environments which has long been and will always remain a serious problem due to their native environment which is grassland areas. That being said, fleas are easily able to transfer themselves between hosts and objects giving their ability to jump any where between 18 - 33 centimeters (depending at which axis). Owning a pet is the highest possibility of fleas being brought into the a the premises due to them walking through grassland areas or interacting with other animals which happen to be infested though a lower possibility of being brought in by an unsuspecting guest also exists.
Fleas can be extremely cryptic only making themselves visible when it's feeding time, and in relation to feeding, fleas are to be considered dangerous as they are capable of transmitting disease if they were to feed on animals from an unsanitary environment. Personal Preventative Measures

How to get rid of Fleas!

The prevention of a flea infestation may seem near impossible giving their minuscule size and ability to latch on to objects and unsuspecting hosts meaning the realisation of an infestation could be well past the early stages. That being said, there still are a number of preventative measures that can be carried out by occupants to prevent or reduce their activity if not get rid of them before or whilst a flea treatment is in progress which are listed below:

  • The following methods of this bullet point are said to be known as home remedies and resolves to a flea infestation which by chance may have worked for some occupants:
  1. Sprinkling salt in your home on all fabricated surfaces and floor surfaces is said to control a Flea Infestation as it supposedly acts as an abrasive drying agent damaging and drawing the moisture from fleas' exoskeleton.
  2. Making a Flea Spray form Lemons are another way said to repel and kill fleas if your home has become infested as they contain a citrus extract called D-limonene, which repels and kills them.
  3. The use certain Plants internally and/or externally around your home is said to act as a deterrent due to fleas disliking particular oils, compounds, and chemicals which the plants emit and to an extent may hold some truth as the Chrysanthemum flower gives off a natural chemical used in insecticides known as pyrethrum (the Pennyroyal, Lavender, Mint and Rosemary are all said to be deterrents).
  • Regularly Check and Clean both yours and the pets bedding due to the presence of Eggs, Faeces or Fleas themselves.
  • Have your Pet Treated for Fleas by veterinary upon suspicion. If in doubt, Comb Through Your Pets Fur wiping/tapping the contents onto a piece of wet kitchen towel awaiting any black dots to turn red indicating that the dots are flea faeces.
  • Regularly Vacuum Fabricated Surfaces as this may reduce the amount of fleas and eggs that could be residing within the surfaces (remember to empty the contents of the cylinder or dispose of the vacuum bag immediately after vacuuming for fleas).

And last but not least, the best course of action to take would be to contact Steel Guard Pest Control for a survey and preventative programme to be carried out!
