.

Public Awareness

There are a number of ant species commonly known to infest a premises and its surrounding areas within the UK, though the three species which are commonplace within ours homes and businesses are known as the Black Ant (Lasius Niger), the Red Ant (Myrmica rubra) and the Pharaoh's Ant (Monomorium Pharaonis). Before ants enter a premises, whilst foraging for resources they may come into contact with unsanitary objects or areas resulting in the spread of bacteria and disease contaminating anything they come into contact with though they are mainly considered to be nuisance pests. Typically ants will also cause damage to garden areas, building materials and stored foodstuffs.

• Black Ants are usually found in garden areas though on many occasions may nest within the cavities of a premises and are harmless.
• Red Ants are also found in garden areas and are an aggressive species with a tendency to bite delivering a painful sting.
• Pharaoh Ants are only found in exceptionally warm environments within a property (e.g hotels, hospitals, bakeries, restaurants, etc.) due to being a tropical species though on occasion can be found in a residential premises.

The limit of how large an ant colony can become is well within the thousands and how they may spread depends on the species leaving a garden or a premises completely overran by an infestation meaning the amount of damage and contamination to foodstuffs and materials could be considerably high which is why professionals like ourselves should be contacted as soon as signs or even suspicion becomes apparent..

Due to their size and ability they are able to gain access through the smallest crevices or exploit weathered/worn materials. There are a number of preventative measures that can be carried out by occupants for an ant infestation to be reduced if not controlled before or whilst treatment is in progress which are listed below:

  • Regularly Clean All Surfaces both internally and externally, keeping them clear of food debris and sweet substances.
  • Ensure you Seal Away all food and sweet substances and to Place Food Waste in a Stand Alone Bins avoiding temporarily leaving waste bags out in the open as this may induce activity.
  • If any Fruit Trees exist in or overlap your premises, ensure that any fallen fruit are collected to prevent excessive activity or the growth of a colony.
  • Regularly Check the External Surroundings of your premises for activity and/or ingress points filling any in with the necessary materials.
  • Also try to ensure that any Taps' Valves used for internal and external water sources are turned off deterring activity .
